HMD protects even more designs at EUIPO

HMD completely opened up just before MWC2024 and announced its future path, which will consist of four new devices and a different business model. Two devices will mark the beginning of the HMD brand: one is a flip phone made for all Barbie fans, and the other will be an original Nokia, a Nokia-branded feature phone that could even come with 5G.

HMD even teased some images of its new phones, although the internet was full of renders that implied a new design approach based on the old Fabula design Nokia implemented with the Nokia N9. I must say I liked what I saw, but at the same time, I was sad it won’t be applied to new Nokia smartphones. However, we got new colours of G22 and G42, the last Nokia-branded smartphones HMD launched and is still selling worldwide.

I was also surprised by how well HMD hid all the data regarding the new devices. The information is tightly kept under control. The only information about HMD preparing the devices is coming from some certificates, but also from EUIPO, where HMD is protecting the design of its future devices.

Now, four more design applications have been filed with EUIPO. I am not sure whether these are Nokia devices, HMD devices, or maybe some kind of accessory, or even smart outfit gadgets that are part of a Fusion project. EUIPO applications don’t reveal much, except that HMD is cooking something.

May and July are set for the full reveal of the future HMD products, and as Lars Silberbauer told us in an interview, the devices should be available in stores in selected markets upon release, which is commendable. Many other manufacturers are taking that approach, and it is about time for HMD to do the same.
