HMD brings the Fusion project for creating smart outfits

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona, HMD announced HMD Fusion – a radically new and innovative approach to smartphones and their capabilities.

Essentially, this is a Development Toolkit intended to provide key details of the physical phone design dimensions, hardware interface, and software development APIs to enable the creation of smart outfits.

By using this toolkit, you’ll be able to create smart outfits, for example, if you connect a specific charger, a wallpaper will be started, or you can plug it into a device that will get 5W of power on battery and up to 15W when the phone is charged. This feature is reminiscent of Nokia Lumia devices like the Camera grip for Lumia 1020. Also, Jolla used a similar approach back in 2014 with The Other Half smart cover designed for its Jolla 1.

By creating these outfits, you should be able to enable practically endless new applications, extending the functionality of the phones. HMD will provide people with the design specifications and technical details necessary to create smart outfits themselves.

The first version of the toolkit is available for download, with future updates planned. Download the PDF manual here.
