Bittium Tough Mobile 3: Finnish 5G Phone Made in Europe

Finnish company Bittium has unveiled its new Tough Mobile 3, a potentially modular smartphone designed for governments, defense forces, institutions, and critical infrastructure. The device combines military-grade durability with state-level security, and will be manufactured in Europe by HMD Secure.
The Tough Mobile 3 runs on Android 15 and supports 5G connectivity, but its biggest highlight is the dual operating system – Bittium Secure OS for confidential communication and a hardened Android for personal use. This dual-boot feature removes the need to carry two separate devices.
Security is the core of the phone. It offers tamper detection, hardware and software integrity checks, a dedicated secure element chip for credentials and encryption keys, and a Privacy Mode that disables cameras, microphones, sensors, and Bluetooth with a single tap. The device integrates with Bittium’s SafeMove Mobile VPN and Secure Call solutions, enabling quantum-secure communications designed to meet EU and NATO classification levels.
When it comes to hardware, Bittium went for Qualcomm’s brand-new Dragonwing Q-6690 FP4 platform – an interesting choice, as the Fairphone 5 used its predecessor, the QCM6490. The new Dragonwing chip is closest in performance class to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, but optimized for longevity and secure enterprise-grade usage. The phone is equipped with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, expandable via microSD.

The 6.32-inch FHD+ display is readable in direct sunlight and works with gloves or wet fingers. On the camera side, there’s a 50 MP main sensor with laser autofocus and a 50 MP front-facing camera, supported by a dual LED flash and an additional red LED flashlight for night operations.
The device is built to last with IP68 water and dust resistance and MIL-STD-810H certification for shock and drop resistance. It operates in extreme temperatures ranging from –20 °C to +55 °C.
Other features include:
- 5G (sub-6), eSIM + dual SIM (DSDS/DSDA)
- Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, GPS/A-GPS
- USB-C 3.1 with Desktop Mode, DisplayPort, and OTG
- Programmable emergency and PTT/PTV buttons
- 4500 mAh battery (non-removable)
The Bittium Tough Mobile 3 will debut at the DSEI defense fair in London (September 9–12, 2025), with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026.
Still, for all the cutting-edge hardware and uncompromising security, the most insecure element of this phone might just be its relatively modest 4500 mAh battery.
