HMD Skyline Gains Visibility, but Is It Too Late?
|HMD is slowly moving away from the Nokia brand, which is probably the best move for both HMD and Nokia. However, HMD also needs greater awareness of its own brand. The company has done its best so far, leveraging newly designed phones that borrow heavily from early Lumia-era Nokia designs while introducing a few modern features.
One such device is the HMD Skyline, intended to elevate the company’s reputation. It stands out with two key features that few manufacturers offer: repairability and Qi2 wireless charging.
This is exactly what Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) highlighted in a strategically important video featuring HMD’s flagship device. Being covered by a popular tech YouTube channel is a big deal for the company. HMD previously collaborated with Zack from JerryRigEverything, and it seems their PR team is finally making smart moves. However, Skyline was announced last year and is only now gaining major attention. Either JRE and MKBHD are expensive, or HMD’s PR strategy is slow.
Overall, it’s great to see the Skyline getting recognition, but its successor should already be gearing up for MWC 2025. Skyline isn’t perfect—it needs refinements in design and significant camera software improvements. MKBHD said it well, this phone might not sell well, so HMD needs to do something regarding that.
Also, one of those two things MKBHD is focused on, isn’t working well. Qi2 proved to be unreliable at best and it is demonstrated in the video when Maques positions Skyline on a Qi2 charger, it isn’t charging. Ah well… Check out the video.
