Nokia Leads Major European Project on Sustainable 6G Development
|Nokia announced today that it has been chosen by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), a European public-private partnership, to lead the SUSTAIN-6G project. This initiative will explore sustainable uses of 6G technology in energy, healthcare, and agriculture to support environmental, economic, and societal goals.
The project, launching in January 2025 and scheduled to run until 2027, aims to apply 6G technology to:
- Energy Smart Grids: Developing microgrids with AI-based real-time control for efficient and resilient power distribution.
- E-Health and Telemedicine: Expanding 6G infrastructure for secure medical data sharing and remote diagnosis, improving healthcare in underserved areas.
- Agriculture: Leveraging 6G for high-bandwidth agricultural applications, data analytics, and automation, enhancing productivity and sustainability.
As a lighthouse project, SUSTAIN-6G is a key European initiative. It follows Nokia’s previous 6G efforts, Hexa-X and Hexa-X-II, which laid the groundwork for 6G pre-standardization and use cases.
