IFA 2024: Introducing the Modular HMD Fusion

Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has just unveiled its most customizable smartphone yet – the HMD Fusion. This device combines the latest technology with a modular design, offering users the ability to switch “Outfits” that enhance both functionality and style.

Key Features include the Smart Outfits, powered by six specialized Smart Pins, which can significantly change how the phone is used. These outfits will be priced between €39 and €99, depending on the type. Some outfits are developed by HMD, while partners will produce others. The Fuison Kit was released previously so even you can design your own Smart Outfit.

Customizable Fusion Outfits Overview

Later this year, users will be able to choose from interchangeable “Outfits” designed to add unique features and functionality to the phone. Whether you need a built-in ring light for selfies, a rugged case for protection, or a gaming controller, these outfits will take the phone’s capabilities to the next level.

• Flashy Outfit: Ideal for content creators, this outfit features a built-in ring light for both front and rear cameras, offering customizable lighting and camera effects via the camera app.

• Rugged Outfit: Designed for durability, it’s IP68-rated for dust and water resistance. It also includes wireless charging support and an emergency button (ICE), making it perfect for adventure lovers.
• Casual Outfit: Highlighting the phone’s industrial-chic design, this outfit offers minimal protection while maintaining the sleek look.

The first Outfit done by a partner for HMD Fusion device is one from the French company Coppernic which designs, produces, and deploys professional-grade handheld devices & total solutions for control and traceability applications.

Build and Durability (Repairability)

HMD Fusion features a stainless steel-reinforced plastic casing, offering a durable yet slim design at just 8.3 mm thick, allowing for slightly thicker outfits. I must say I like the industrial look they took when designing this phone.

 

The phone supports Gen 2 repairability, making it easy for users to replace screens, batteries, and other components using an iFixit kit. This continues HMD’s commitment to sustainability through user repairability. 16+7 screws hold the back cover and internal shell which allows the device parts like battery, display etc. to be easily replaced.

 

Detox Mode

With the rise of digital detoxing, HMD Fusion will soon feature an in-built Detox Mode, allowing users to block apps and contacts to reduce distractions and promote a balanced digital life.
