HMD ditches Nokia brand in favor of its own. What could possibly go wrong?
|Well, they still haven’t ditched it officially, but according to the latest news, the unfortunate event is imminent. HMD, the company behind Nokia brand smartphones since 2016. is currently at a crossroads. Eight years after acquiring the Nokia brand, it hadn’t managed to take any advantage. I’ve already written about the Nokia dying again article, and now we have some new developments here.
HMD’s contract with Nokia expires within two years, and according to the latest events, they are ready to move from the Nokia brand for their smartphones to their own, which they had announced recently. This company failed to gain any success with the once-famous Nokia name, and it’s struggling to keep business continuation.
Last Year, Nokia ditched the old logo and introduced a new one. OK, maybe they just wanted to do some refreshments, but since such big companies are not likely to change their logo just like that, there are some speculations that they wanted to distinguish themselves from the Nokia phones, which they haven’t been producing since 2013. Nokia remains a telecom infrastructure manufacturer, so it doesn’t want to have anything with Nokia phones. In some way, this claim has been admitted by Nokia itself in one of its recent press releases.
We’ve also recently witnessed plans for removing Nokia phones from the Nokia web to HMDs, which is another sign of Nokia’s distancing from the Nokia phones. They apparently don’t want to have anything with HMD smartphones, and they sure have a very good reason for that.
In such a situation, HMD doesn’t have much space, so they’ve just launched phones under their brand for Verizon. What does it mean? In my humble opinion, it’s another preparing for the future. In two years, HMD won’t have any possibility to manufacture phones under the Nokia brand, so they are making a path to survive on their own.
We don’t know how much money HMD still has in their wallet, but what we do know is that they buried the Nokia brand themselves. They actually have managed to accomplish what even Microsoft hadn’t been capable of. If it wasn’t sad, it would be funny.
I honestly wish good luck to HMD in their adventure to create a completely new smartphone brand from scratch, but I’m also a pessimist when it comes to this matter. Sure, if HMD finds some new ways to fund itself, it will be great to see another player in the smartphone arena, and I’m gonna be the first to congratulate them.
