Nokia C31 in China comes with Freeme OS

Nokia C31 is an affordable smartphone announced by Nokia Mobile at IFA 2022. It features the dated Unisoc SC9000 Octa-Core processor, built on a 28-nanometer architecture. While this processor might not be power-hungry, the fairly large 6.77-inch HD+ display could be. Fortunately, a 5050mAh battery also powers a 13MP rear camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. This phone could be perfect for digital detox since it is so simple.

The phone originally came with Android 12, but not everywhere. According to a Chinese customer, recently sold Nokia C31 devices came with Freeme OS, a customized Android-based OS developed by Shanghai Droi.

This news was shared by Hikari Calyx, who also posted about the same phone running Freeme OS. However, there appears to be a significant issue with the launcher on phones bought from JD, where one swipe opens TikTok instantly, even if the user didn’t intend to use the app.

It seems that different OS can be installed on Nokia phones after all, at least on Chinese versions of the phone, raising the possibility of changing the OS on other Nokia devices. Now, it’s intriguing to consider Sailfish OS on the Nokia 8.3 5G or X30.
