Nokia and Tampere University partner to develop 5G chipsets

Finnish telecommunications giant Nokia joined forces with the Tampere University in Finland to research and develop 5G chipsets. A Center of Excellence will be established to “enhance the development of System-on-Chip (SoC) custom processors for its [Nokia’s] ReefShark chipset portfolio.”

The center will be located at the University campus in Tampere, Finland and is expected to open in November this year. Aspects of SoC development Nokia aims to improve with this partnership are design, manufacturing, time-to-market and build a long-term SoC development competence. The partnership will explore utilizing AI, machine learning, security hardware development and open source hardware based SoCs. This project is supported by Business Finland through Nokia’s Veturi initiative.
