Major smartphone makers already announcing Snapdragon 865 devices

The Covid-19 outbreak prompted organizers to cancel the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year. This caused many smartphone manufacturers to launch their offerings in separate and almost private events.

Nokia Mobile was one of the MWC2020 participants with handful of new Android smartphones and feature phones ready for the stage that we are still waiting for. We haven’t heard anything official about the new announcement date, aside from few rumors, and possible leaked product certifications. We are still not sure when will the Nokia 9 PureView successor come, and some would argue that it’s coming too late already. The reasoning for that lies in Qualcomm’s press release detailing all smartphone brands that have at least one smartphone powered by the flagship Snapdragon 865 5G SoC. The list includes major brands like Samsung, OPPO, ASUS, Lenovo, Sony, Xiaomi, and even the newcomer, Realme.

Nokia Mobile is being pretty quiet about their flagship smartphone. Previous rumors said that Nokia 9.2 PV might be ready for the fall of 2020, but other rumors suggest it might come in the first quarter of 2021. This delay might be caused by the decision to upgrade the Snapdragon 855 to the more recent 5G-capable Snapdragon 865. This probably prompted Nokia Mobile to move the event at a later date, giving them enough time for the redevelopment of the product. This is a good choice to do, but the delay could potentially hurt the Nokia 9.2 sales since the flagship market would be already saturated. The shipment of Snapdragon 865 is not affected by the Covid-19 outbreak at the moment, and that is good since Nokia Mobile will have enough stocks available to push the production of a new Nokia 9. I would rather see a new Nokia 9 PV come late than unfinished like the original one was if I had to chose. However, Nokia Mobile needs to make this phone special enough so people would skip other smartphones and go for it.

In the meantime, we’ll have to be satisfied with Nokia 8.2 or Nokia 8.3 that HMD’s CPO Juho Sarvikas already confirmed the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit last December. This Snapdragon 765 5G phone should be announced during March since the phone is most probably ready for it.

Nokia Mobile has been learning from their past mistakes (albeit last minute) and hopefully, they will be able to sort this out before the users and media will consider their flagship phone obsolete out of the box again like the gorgeous Nokia 8 Sirocco and first computational photography smartphone Nokia 9 PureView were because of a last generation SoC.
