This December, HMD Global started the Beta Labs program for Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. While the rollout of Oreo Beta via Beta Labs went smoothly, Nokia 6 users faced problems. To download Oreo Beta via Beta Labs, Nokia 6 devices should be running the latest December update, but not all Nokia 6 devices received the December update when HMD started Beta Labs for Nokia 6. HMD later released the December update and a lot of Nokia 6 users were able to access the Beta Labs and download Android Oreo. Unfortunately, due to some restrictions, Nokia 6 users in China, Taiwan and US cannot access the Beta Labs.
Users in India are also waiting to be allowed into Beta Labs. HMD faced some India-specific issues with the Indian variants of Nokia 6, that are manufactured in India, but today, HMD’s CPO Juho Sarvikas announced that users in India will soon be able to enroll to Beta Labs to download Oreo Beta. HMD plans to include “a couple of improvements” for Indian users and the update (via Beta Labs) should be available next week, under the condition that some last minute problems don’t arise. Most certainly, HMD will do only one round of beta testing before releasing the official Oreo.
This is why I shouldn’t give hard dates. We have a couple of improvements that we still want to bring in to the Beta Labs release for Nokia 6 in India since we likely will do just one round before releasing the official Oreo. Think 1st wk of the year, almost ship ready maturity.
On HMD’s official site for Beta Labs, there is a note that the beta labs support will be limited between 22.12.2017 and 02.01.2018., meaning that official Oreo for Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 is coming early next year.
