Nokia is Android Authority’s smartphone brand of the year
|A month ago we were surprised to learn that Android Authority, or more precisely the writer Abhishek Baxi things that, in general, Nokia 8 seems to be a top choice for someone who wants a (midrange) flagship. The main universal drawback of the 8 has been the lack of a “bezel-less” design, but Baxi in his article, where he micro-reviews the 8 in fact, mentions what kind of users will like the Nokia 8 and what the main reason for buying the 8, instead of other devices would be. It’s not fair to quote (just) one sentence from any article, but here it is how Baxi concluded: “Nokia 8 is not cutting-edge but does everything right.“. You can read more about his thoughts about the 8 here.
Android Authority organized this year’s “best of” awards, where they are choosing the best smartphones, brands, cameras, etc in the Android universe. In the category smartphone brand of the year, Android Authority picked 3 Companies that equally deserve this title: Samsung, Huawei and Nokia (HMD Global). For the folks from the U.S. reading this, Huawei (and even Nokia) could seem like a strange choice for a brand, because of their absence from the US market. In US, the dominant Android player is Samsung, but in the rest of the world, especially Europe, Huawei is emerging as a brand that stands for trust, reliability and is better priced than Samsung across all market segments. Nokia, on the other hand, has and always had a strong brand reputation, and especially this year, when HMD announced the new 3310 and pretty good smartphones like Nokia 5, 6 or 8.
To declare the winner, every member of Android Authority team voted for one brand. After the voting was concluded, Nokia (HMD Globa) got the most votes and was declared by Android Authority as the smartphone brand of the year.
In other categories, Nokia 8 received the honorable mention in “Best bang for your buck” category, behind OnePlus 5T that was crowned as the best value-for-money device. Android Authority also made a table with all phones and their scores that were nominated for this year’s AA awards, that you can take a look at down below. In general, higher result is better.
Seems that HMD did a good job in smartphones during their first year of doing business, at least according to Android Authority. I think that 2017 was a great start for HMD, but for getting into top 5 smartphone manufacturers and being a serious competitor to Samsung, Huawei and BBK in the Android world, the year 2018 has to be better.
