Garmin Smartwatch Update: New Features for Venu 4 & Fenix 8
Garmin is rolling out a substantial software update across its premium smartwatch lineup, delivering highly requested safety enhancements, hands-free voice commands, and advanced running metrics to a wider range of its popular wearables.
The update covers several key models in Garmin’s ecosystem, including the Fenix 8 series, the Venu 4 and X1, as well as the Forerunner 70 and 170.
Chief among the upgrades is a significant enhancement to the Venu 4’s safety capabilities. While Garmin devices have historically supported incident detection exclusively during specific outdoor workouts, the Venu 4 now offers an all-day fall detection option. If a fall is detected, the watch automatically dispatches a distress message containing the user’s real-time location to pre-selected emergency contacts. Users retain full control over the feature, with the ability to toggle it on for 24/7 monitoring or restrict it to active workout sessions.
The rollout also introduces true hands-free navigation to compatible devices. By utilizing the new “OK Garmin” wake word, users can seamlessly initiate activities, set and manage timers, and interact with the digital voice assistant on their paired smartphone without ever touching their watch screen.
For fitness enthusiasts, Garmin is democratizing its premium training software. Previously exclusive to the running-focused Forerunner 70 and 170 models, the Quick Workout feature and newly refined Run Coach plans are migrating to the Venu 4, Vivoactive 6, and Fenix 8 series. These tools analyze a user’s current fitness level to provide dynamic, personalized daily workout recommendations, offering a more tailored training experience for casual runners and marathoners alike.
The software rollout is currently underway for compatible Garmin devices, though the company notes it may take a few weeks to reach all users globally. Device owners can manually check for the latest firmware using the Garmin Connect or Garmin Explore mobile applications.
