HMD bets on Egypt as its next production hub

HMD Global is quietly strengthening its manufacturing footprint, this time in Egypt. During a meeting with Egypt’s communications minister, CEO Jean-François Baril confirmed plans to expand local phone production, building on a partnership with SICO that started back in 2023.
The idea is simple. Just like in India, make more phones locally, and ship them abroad. HMD already produces around 12 models in Egypt, and now aims to reach 2 million units annually by 2026, covering both feature phones and smartphones.
Egypt is expected to play a bigger role going forward, not just for local sales, but as an export base for North Africa and beyond, with eyes on wider African and even European markets.
For HMD, it’s a practical move. For Egypt, it’s part of a bigger plan to become a regional electronics hub.
We’ll see how far this one goes.
