Nothing Phone 4a and 3a Receive Massive 3GB Nothing OS 5.0 Android 17 Update

Beating its own deployment roadmap, tech brand Nothing has officially launched the stable Nothing OS 5.0 update, based on Android 17, for the Nothing Phone 3a, 3a Pro, 4a, and 4a Pro. Originally slated for a November release, the staggered rollout is already hitting devices globally via cellular and Wi-Fi networks, demonstrating the company’s accelerated commitment to long-term software support for its mid-range smartphones.
The massive 3.09 GB over-the-air (OTA) update brings a substantial visual overhaul and a suite of new tools. Because of the file size, users are advised to utilize a stable Wi-Fi connection for the download, which can be triggered manually via the System Updates menu.
Visual Overhaul and Glyph Management
Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a frosted glass “Translucent” theme, refreshing system menus and status bar icons for a sleeker aesthetic. The user interface now features a split notification panel, bulk organization capabilities for home screen icons, and three new desktop widgets. Furthermore, Nothing has decoupled its signature rear lighting controls from the main settings, migrating them into a dedicated standalone Glyph app complete with a custom Glyph Timer widget. Lock screen customization has also been refined with expanded dark theme options and new clock face designs.
Camera and Performance Enhancements
The native Camera app receives a noticeable performance boost across all four devices, featuring a cleaner shooting layout and smoother interface animations. A newly integrated Dual-view Video mode allows content creators to record simultaneously from the front and rear cameras. The update also delivers model-specific upgrades: Phone 3a owners gain access to advanced image tuning controls with seven adjustable effects, while the Phone 4a series benefits from significantly faster voice transcription speeds.
Android 17 Core Features
Underpinning the custom interface are standard Android 17 privacy and system enhancements. The update packages improved HDR brightness controls and introduces a new yellow status indicator that alerts users whenever on-device AI processing is active.
Following the successful deployment to the flagship Phone 3 earlier this month and this accelerated mid-range release, Nothing has confirmed that older models, including the Phone 2a and 2a Plus, are next in line to receive Nothing OS 5.0 in mid-November.
