HMD adds wallet, video calls and AI to feature phones

At MWC 2026, HMD presented a new direction for its feature phone lineup, focusing heavily on services: a built-in digital wallet, video calling through Xpress Chat, and an AI assistant for voice-based tasks.

While the additions aim to expand digital access,  especially in markets like India,  the overall strategy feels increasingly service-driven. Instead of launching bold, serviceable and visually distinctive devices, HMD is now primarily announcing platforms and partnerships.

For long-time fans of characterful hardware experiments , think of what Jolla  attempted with its community-driven approach, this shift may feel less exciting. The innovation is happening in software layers and financial infrastructure, not in the physical devices themselves. More details on supported models and availability are expected later in 2026.

Now that I feel a bit lighter after writing what needs to be written, here is a bit more details about the new services.

So, HMD has announced a new set of services for its feature phone portfolio at MWC 2026 in Barcelona, outlining its plan to expand the role of smart feature phones through financial services, communication tools and AI-powered assistance.

The company says that through 2026 it will introduce three major additions to selected feature phones: a built-in digital wallet, video calling via a new chat app, and an AI assistant designed for voice-based everyday tasks.

Digital wallet with remittance support

HMD plans to launch a built-in digital wallet on feature phones, starting in India in the first half of 2026, with a wider rollout later in the year.

The wallet is designed to enable secure remittances, allowing users to receive money, store funds on the device and cash out through local payment systems. Users will also be able to transfer funds to their UPI accounts for everyday payments.

The service is being developed in partnership with fintech provider Kivi3 and blockchain infrastructure company Polygon Labs. HMD says the solution will include device-level security and PIN protection.

India has been selected as the launch market due to its strong remittance flows and continued importance of feature phones.

Video calling on feature phones

HMD is also introducing video calling to feature phones via its new Xpress Chat app. The app will support video calls using the front-facing camera, as well as voice messages, photo sharing and group chats.

According to HMD, communication will work between compatible feature phones and smartphones, provided both devices have the Xpress Chat app installed.

AI assistant for everyday tasks

For the first time, HMD will bring an AI assistant to its feature phone lineup. The assistant will allow users to perform tasks such as making calls, setting alarms, turning on the torch and asking simple questions using voice commands.

The company says the goal is to simplify navigation and reduce reliance on complex menus, particularly for users whose feature phone may be their only connected device.

Focus on older adults

HMD also announced a pilot project in partnership with inTouch, aimed at older adults. The service integrates AI companionship into feature phones, accessible via a single button press.

The AI is designed to speak slowly, retain personal context and engage in conversation tailored to seniors. The pilot is expected to begin in Europe, with a broader rollout planned depending on results.
