HMD TOUCH 4G is a step towards a “better phone”

HMD is apparently working on something that could bridge the gap between a smartphone and a feature phone. According to new info, the upcoming device might be called HMD TOUCH 4G, and it’s part of The Better Phone Project, specifically the COMPASS family.

The idea behind it seems quite interesting, a phone that’s as smart as a smartphone, but as simple and reliable as a feature phone. If that sounds familiar, it’s because HMD seems to be reviving the Nokia Asha philosophy, phones that offered apps, touchscreens, and basic smart features without the full Android experience.

If done right, this kind of device could be a hit. A smooth and fast interface, good audio codecs, a decent camera, and a nice display could make it a practical everyday phone. But… execution will be key. Based on HMD’s recent track record, there’s some doubt whether the TOUCH 4G will deliver beyond its design, which reportedly resembles the good old Fabula design lines.

According to Smashx_60, expectations should stay modest. The HMD TOUCH 4G is basically a touchscreen feature phone. It should support UPI, Cloud Apps, some GMS features, AliPay, messaging apps, and more.

The launch is expected on October 9, with availability planned for India, China, Thailand, the UK, Germany, the USA, France, and more markets soon after.

If HMD truly manages to balance simplicity and functionality, the TOUCH 4G could become one of its best-selling devices yet. But as always, we’ll wait and see how “smart” the better phone really is.
