Samsung Sensor OLED scans fingerprint anywhere on screen

I just recently pondered whether Samsung might be the next Nokia, and in every sense, I think Samsung is a true continuation of the glorious company. They’re making all the same mistakes in the smartphone business, but also remain one of the rare manufacturers still pushing real innovation.

One of the latest proofs of that came at SID Display Week 2025 in San Jose, where Samsung Display unveiled its new Sensor OLED panel. This isn’t just any screen – it’s capable of reading fingerprints, heart rate, blood pressure, and even stress levels, all directly from anywhere on the display.

The Sensor OLED technology was first described earlier this year in Nature Communications, but this is the first time Samsung has publicly demonstrated the panel.

While current under-display fingerprint scanners are limited to a specific area, Samsung’s Sensor OLED integrates organic photodiodes (OPDs) directly into the OLED panel itself. That means your finger can go anywhere on the screen – no more guessing where to press.

The health tracking features work similarly to how smartwatches do it – by analyzing how light reflects off the blood vessels in your finger as they expand and contract. All that data is then processed through the OPD layer to provide real-time health insights.

This kind of tech paves the way for even thinner devices, and we might see it soon in a future flagship – potentially a successor to the Galaxy S25 Edge.
