WhatsApp beta Introduces On-Device Message Translation

WhatsApp is gradually rolling out a new translation feature for chat messages and channel updates, currently available to select Android users enrolled in the beta program.

As reported by WABetaInfo, the feature is accessible to users running WhatsApp beta version 2.25.12.25 on Android. The rollout is expected to expand to more beta testers in the coming weeks.

Supported Languages and Functionality

The new feature allows users to translate messages written in Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Hindi, and Russian directly within the app. Notably, the translation process takes place on-device, meaning no internet connection is required once the necessary language pack is downloaded.

Users can either download specific language packs or opt for an auto-detect pack, which identifies the language of incoming messages and translates them accordingly.

Translation Options and Controls

Users can manage translation preferences from the chat info screen, enabling automatic translations on a per-chat basis—whether in private or group conversations. For those who prefer manual control, individual messages can be translated by selecting the message and tapping the “Translate” option.

Privacy and Accuracy

Since the translations are handled locally on the device using lightweight language packs, the accuracy might not match that of cloud-based translation services. However, WhatsApp encourages users to submit feedback to help improve the feature. Importantly, WhatsApp does this without sending the original or translated messages to Meta, ensuring user privacy.

If you’re part of the WhatsApp for Android beta program and have received access to this feature, feel free to share your experience.
