WhatsApp Rolls Out Major Update with Group Online Status, Event Planning, and Enhanced Video Calls

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a comprehensive update packed with new features aimed at improving how users interact across chats, calls, and channels. Some features are already live, while others are arriving gradually on both Android and iOS.

One of the standout changes is a new “Online” activity indicator for group chats. This feature allows users to see how many participants are currently active in the conversation, offering better insight into whether you’re messaging a lively group or an inactive one — all without exposing specific usernames.

To reduce notification fatigue, WhatsApp now offers customizable group alerts. With the new “Notify for” option, users can choose between receiving all messages or only “Highlights,” which include @mentions, replies, and texts from saved contacts.

Another major upgrade is the expansion of the Events feature beyond group chats. Now, users can create events in one-on-one conversations, set RSVPs (including “maybe”), invite a plus-one, and even pin events directly within the chat window.

WhatsApp has also made conversations more interactive with tappable emoji reactions. If someone reacts to a message, you can tap that emoji to either add the same reaction or “+1” it — similar to how Slack handles emoji reactions.

Video calling gets a significant boost as well, thanks to a more robust routing system that reduces freezing and dropouts. Improved bandwidth detection now enables a quicker upgrade to HD video quality based on connection speed.

For iPhone users, the update brings some iOS-exclusive features such as pinch-to-zoom during video calls and the ability to scan documents directly from the attachment menu. Users can also now set WhatsApp as their default call and messaging app.

Lastly, WhatsApp Channels are receiving new tools for admins. These include short-form video messages up to 60 seconds, QR code sharing for easy promotion, and voice message transcription for followers who prefer text-based updates.

Most of these enhancements are now available in the latest stable version of WhatsApp, though some users may experience a short delay as the rollout continues over the coming weeks.
