Reddit Expands Machine Translation to Hindi in India

As part of its efforts to grow its user base in India, Reddit has expanded its machine translation feature to automatically translate posts and comments into Hindi.

“With this expansion, authentic, community-driven content is now accessible in one of India’s most widely spoken languages,” the company announced in an update to its blog post. Reddit also mentioned that support for Bengali will be added soon.

Reddit first began testing its platform-wide machine translation feature in May last year, starting with French. By September, the company had expanded the feature to over 35 countries, adding support for Spanish and Portuguese as well.

Earlier this month, Reddit introduced its AI-powered search feature, called Answers, to users in India, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Previously, this feature had been available only to a limited group of English-speaking users in the United States.

India continues to be a major area of focus for Reddit. The company has hired staff across several departments in India, including community development, growth, legal affairs, and engineering, and is currently seeking additional hires for content and community management roles.
