Patrik Hammarén Appointed as President of Nokia Technologies

Nokia has officially announced Patrik Hammarén as the new President of Nokia Technologies, effective January 22, 2025. Hammarén steps into this role after serving as Vice President within the same department, a position he held since Jenny Lukander’s departure in late 2024.

A Veteran of Nokia’s Patent Licensing Business

Hammarén brings nearly two decades of experience at Nokia, joining the company in 2007. Over the years, he has been integral to the success of Nokia Technologies, particularly in the management and monetization of its patent portfolio.

In his new role, Hammarén will oversee the management of Nokia’s extensive intellectual property assets. This includes driving value from Nokia’s patent portfolio, which spans diverse technologies like 5G, IoT, and advanced AI. His responsibilities will also involve fostering collaborations that leverage Nokia’s innovations across industries, while safeguarding the company’s intellectual property.

While this appointment is a significant step for Nokia’s intellectual property business, it’s hard not to reminisce about the days when Nokia Technologies represented more than patent licensing. Back then, the division was a hub of innovation, investing in bold ideas and groundbreaking technology.

Of course, patents must be rooted in research, which means some technological development is still happening. However, the spirit of Nokia’s R&D, which once championed transformative ideas, feels like a thing of the past.
