Aalto University Unveils the Nokia Design Archive

Aalto University has opened the archive of Nokia devices, design sketches, videos, and various other materials that bring us closer to the ingenuity of the company. The archive also reveals how Nokia’s employees thought and shows the enormous resources the company had to pioneer the world of consumer products.

The Nokia Design Archive is available on the Aalto University website. Its user interface is designed as a spiderweb, neatly organizing the collected materials into several main topics that branch out into detailed explorations of individual devices. I spent an hour surfing through it and stumbled upon videos of Nokia’s Moonraker smartwatch UI, showcasing how well it was designed to complement Lumia devices (video on this link).

Oh, can you imagine what it was like to be a Nokia employee back in the day, working on such groundbreaking devices? This archive offers a glimpse into that world. Aalto University has done a fantastic job, and I hope the archive remains accessible for a long time to come.
