Nokia Makes World’s First Immersive Voice and Audio Call
|Nokia has achieved a significant milestone by making the world’s first live immersive voice and audio call over a cellular network using the new 3GPP Immersive Voice and Audio Services (IVAS) codec. In the call, Nokia’s President and CEO, Pekka Lundmark, connected with Stefan Lindström, Finland’s Ambassador of Digitalization and New Technologies, demonstrating the real-time 3D spatial sound experience from Nokia’s campus in Espoo using a Pixel 7 Pro phone.
This IVAS codec, part of the upcoming 5G Advanced standard, marks a major leap from today’s monophonic smartphone voice calls, offering a spatial and enhanced listening experience. Stefan Lindström highlighted the technology’s potential to revolutionize extended reality (XR) and metaverse applications.
Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, expressed pride in Nokia’s leading role in this innovation, emphasizing that standardization will allow global users to benefit.
Developed by a consortium of 13 companies, with Nokia playing a leading role, the IVAS codec enables live spatial audio across connected devices like smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Nokia’s demonstration of IVAS technology, even before its mobile network implementation, underscores its leadership in connectivity standards development, boasting over 20,000 patent families, including more than 6,000 essential to 5G.
