Nokia and SURF Boost CERN’s LHC Upgrade

This is quite interesting, firstly because it involves Nokia, and secondly, because it mentions the LHC, or CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, a scientific megaproject for researching subatomic particles.

Just in case you didn’t know, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, located at the European particle physics laboratory CERN in Switzerland.

Anyway, Nokia successfully collaborated with SURF, the collaborative organization for IT in Dutch education and research, and achieved an 800Gb/s transmission on existing fiber installed by SURF.

This achievement is part of preparations for a massive upgrade to CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. The trial was conducted over a 1648 km existing fiber link connecting research facilities at Nikhef, CERN, and SURF.

The PSE-6s digital signal processor (DSP)

The higher capacity network is essential for upgrading the CERN particle accelerator, enabling better research and significantly growing data sets by approximately a factor of five. This successful test demonstrates the potential of existing infrastructure to handle large data exchanges and showcases the interoperability and performance of Nokia’s PSE-6s super-coherent optics.
