Data sheets of HMD’s Latest Nokia Feature Phones

HMD has launched new Nokia feature phones: the Nokia 5310, the Nokia 6310, and one of the last Nokia feature phones designed by Microsoft, the selfie phone Nokia 230. All these phones utilize the same Unisoc processor 6531F, built on a 40 nm process, suggesting it was designed a decade ago or more. Additionally, all three phones introduce the USB-C standard to the feature phone class, a requirement in today’s market.

While this is a positive step, I can’t help but feel that HMD missed an opportunity to enhance the usability of these phones by providing them with at least 4G connectivity. Instead, they opted for the classic 2G standard, which is gradually becoming obsolete. However, it still holds relevance in markets like India and surrounding countries where these feature phones will primarily be sold.

The only noticeable change is the addition of a new camera pill around the main camera sensor and LED flash in the Nokia 230.

Here is how Adam Ferguson, Global Head of Insight, Proposition and Product Marketing at HMD commented on the refresh of Nokia devices:

“Some things never go out of fashion. Like the iconic audio capabilities of the Nokia 5310, the classic design of the Nokia 6310 and the Nokia 230’s sleek reliability. And with dumbphones surging across different markets, there’s no better time to welcome these latest editions to the family.”

I do agree that modern smartphones are becoming a burden for modern individuals, and there is indeed a need to detox from excessive phone use. However, certain modern conveniences, such as certain messaging apps, could be integrated since fewer people rely on SMS messaging nowadays. Ultimately, the market will determine whether this decision was wise.
