HMD protects the design of a new phone

HMD Global, the Human Mobile Device, has filed an application with the EUIPO to protect the design of its unreleased device. The application was submitted on February 13th, indicating it is a relatively recent development, suggesting it may be a new phone HMD plans to unveil at MWC2024.

Thus far, HMD has protected the designs of Nokia phones at EUIPO, so this new filing might pertain to a new Nokia device, most likely a Nokia feature phone with 5G capabilities, as hinted in HMD’s announcement video. However, it’s also possible that HMD is beginning to protect the designs of its own devices, although this will only be confirmed after MWC2024.

This brings the total to three filings that have yet to be revealed on the EUIPO website. While HMD has announced the continuation of Nokia phones, it remains unclear whether new Nokia smartphones or just Nokia classics will be introduced. One of these older unrevealed EUIPO filings might belong to ‘HMD Global Rocky,’ which is likely to be an affordable smartphone based on information from Geekbench. The new filing could be for the anticipated 5G-capable feature phone, although this is speculative due to limited information currently available about upcoming hardware. It’s also possible that HMD reused older designs for its new Legend and Pulse devices, but that seems less likely.

HMD’s event is scheduled for the upcoming Sunday, and there may be some leaks over the weekend. I must commend the company for maintaining tight control over the flow of information which suggests we’ll find all about the devices on Sunday :).
