Nokia announces over 3000 5G patent declarations

Nokia announced this morning that the company declared over 3000 5G patent families as essential for the fifth generation of the mobile connectivity standard. Half a year ago, Nokia had 2000 declarations, which means a 50% increase in the last 6 months, showing that Nokia’s legal department and Research and Development have been busy working on 5G.

The patent families were declared to ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). ETSI is one of the seven standard organizations that together make 3GPP, the maker of standards for wireless technology.

In the posted press release, Nokia also mentioned high investment in R&D. Being more precise, Nokia spent 129 billion euros in the past 20 years for research and development, including 4.4 billion euros spent last year.
