Nokia launched ReefShark chipset to get networks ready for 5G speeds
|MWC is getting closer and Nokia already started raising tension with the launch of ReefShark, latest chipset that will power future 5G network radios. These new chipsets are made by Nokia in Oulu, Tampere and Espoo in Finland, and in Sunnyvale, California. The ReefShark chipset are specifically developed to power 5G networks and new chipset will also make Nokia’s MIMO cells smaller and energy efficient. Nokia stated that new radios will use up to 64% less power, compared with the units currently used today. This is significant progress and it will offer operators massive reduction in costs. The best thing is that current AirScale radios are upgradable to 5G standards and with a new chipset current speed of 28Gbps will triple to 84Gbps.
Our ReefShark chipsets leverage in-house silicon expertise to dramatically reduce the size, cost and power consumption of operators’ networks and meet the massive compute and radio requirements of #5G. https://t.co/LV2O96nJGr #MWC18 pic.twitter.com/PJc0OW0BaI

Check out the promotional video that Nokia posted on its YouTube channel.
Nokia is currently testing the ReefShark chipset with 30 operators, and will speed up the deployment of it by the end of 2018. Therefore, everybody interested in upgrading its network with new ReefShark chipset can expect massive shipment of the ReefShark in 3Q of 2018.
Nokia really started early preparing herself for the 5G era and it looks well positioned and prepared. I expect that Nokia’s MWC booth will be crowded this year. New health gadgets, new 5G networking gear, new Nokia phones… This is even better Nokia than before 2012. Maybe it is time to bring Nokia World event back? maybe some small event in Espoo, during summer :).
