Android 9 Pie (GO edition) officially announced; coming this fall

Nokia 2.1 with Android Oreo (GO edition)

To bring Android devices even to lower price points, while remaining still useable, Google introduced Android (GO edition) last year. A version of, then, Android Oreo optimized for low end hardware, that takes less memory and has specially made lightweight “GO” apps of popular Google services.

Google recently announced Android 9 Pie, so it was logically to expect a soon announcement of the GO edition of the new version of Android too. That happened this week when Google officially unveiled Android 9 Pie (GO edition). The new version comes with some improvements with the most important being:

  • Up to an additional 500MB of storage available out of the box
  • Faster device boot times
  • Top-of-the-line security features like verified boot
  • A accessible dashboard for tracking and monitoring data consumption

First devices with Android 9 Pie (GO editions) should hit the market during Fall, and I hope that HMD will provide updates to Nokia 1 and Nokia 2.1 during that period, too. HMD Global already confirmed that all Nokia smartphones will be updated to Pie, so it is just a matter of time.
