#Nokia design patents transferred from #Microsoft to #HMD; Lumia Camera UI included

According to EUIPO, about 500 design patents previously owned by Microsoft Mobile Oy were transferred to its new owner, HMD Global Oy. HMD Global is a Finnish startup responsible for creating the next generations of Nokia smartphones and feature phones. Probably the most interesting design patent is the one for the Lumia Camera UI, which is by far the most intuitive camera app and we could soon see it on the new Nokia Android devices, because HMD now owns the design.

Trademarks like PureView, ClearBlack or PureMotion are still registered as Microsoft Mobile’s IP, but there is a high possibility that the trademarks could be transferred as well to HMD. Microsoft Mobile still has about 200 design patents left, according to EUIPO.

Camera UI patent

This is great news for all Nokia fans, because now a part of Nokia legacy, that was bought by Microsoft, returned back to Finland to HMD Global. These transferred designs are probably a part of the mobile Business that Microsoft sold to FIH Mobile last year for about $350 million. The only thing missing now are the famous trademarks.

You can check all HMD’s IP registered at EUIPO here.

What do you think, will we see the Lumia Camera UI on future Nokia Android smartphones? πŸ™‚

Thanks Dheeraj andΒ Abhimanyu for the tip. πŸ™‚

  • Abhimanyu Chauhan

    • Vasheck

you are the one behind the tip, thanks for that, is awesome to know it.

  • I wish they make it default Camera UI on all their current phones via a software update πŸ™‚
I hope PureView, CBD and PureMotion come back to Nokia/HMD too πŸ™‚
Ohh wow I see all phone designs and accessory designs too πŸ™‚

  • Abhimanyu Chauhan

i think everything is coming back with nokia 8

    • Jep, ZEISS, camera tech, camera UI, only PureView missing πŸ˜€

      • I think Asha 311 was also planned to have a slide out keypad according to the design πŸ™‚

do u think nokia 9 will ever come

        • Yes! It definitely going to come man πŸ™‚ Not sure if they will keep the current naming scheme πŸ˜›
I think they will introduce some new naming scheme πŸ™‚

        • Yes, it’s just a matter of time πŸ™‚

So now we can see Lumia design language in future Nokia phones?

        • I didn’t find a lot (if any) Lumia devices in the patents, but we already see some elements: the black front, clean left side, relatively clean back, similar camera housing… The 3 is the most Lumiaish

          • Go to 9-10-11 pages. There are few in there 😊 they look like Lumias 😜

          • I checked, no Lumia or N9. There is the 5800, E7, N8, but Lumia none :/

          • Oh yeah I am sorry. I saw recent Nokia smartphones in the last page yesterday and i thought they were old Lumias. Misunderstanding.
Just saw the date of registration and navigation keys of the phones now. πŸ™‚
            Sorry πŸ™

They still have the pureview technology patent so they can use that technology but can’t use the name pureView….The same was with Nokia clear black technology that’s why Juho sarvikas said “display is laminated”.

        • pege63

Trademarks like PureView, ClearBlack or PureMotion are still registered as Microsoft Mobile’s IP

  • Hemedans

This is good news, everyday i trust HMD more and more.

Anyone remember pelican lytro camera? Many dual camera android phone copied this company, and i do remember Nokia supported them and they planned to release this Technology in their phone.

Even though Nokia succeed to implement refocus by using software alone but it was interesting technology.

I hope lumia UI will come together with this, it is trending now, people want this “bokeh” effect, DSLR like focus.

    • Even Nokia 3’s camera will be better if they add Lumia Camera UI via an OTA update. πŸ™‚ My 1320 has 5MP but photos come out good.

      • Hemedans

Lets hope its not just ui, they will bring camera alogarithms from lumia days,
