WhatsApp’s New Android Preview Could Let You Read Without Blue Ticks

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is developing a new chat-preview feature for Android that could let users read messages without notifying the sender that they have been opened.

According to Android Authority, code in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.44.12 reveals an interface that displays recent messages in a floating window when a conversation is long-pressed. The publication manually activated the unfinished feature and found that reading messages through the preview did not trigger read receipts.

The feature is still in development and is not currently available to public beta testers. There is no confirmed release date.

A More Flexible Alternative to Disabling Read Receipts

WhatsApp already allows users to switch read receipts on or off globally. For people who leave them enabled, however, checking a conversation usually means sending the familiar blue ticks.

Notification previews provide a partial workaround, but they become less useful once a notification has been dismissed or several messages have accumulated.

The proposed preview interface would offer another way to inspect a conversation without opening it fully. In Android Authority’s testing, the sender’s messages remained unread while they were viewed inside the floating card. That is an observed behaviour of the development version, not yet a confirmed capability of a released update.

Long-Pressing a Chat Could Open Messages Instead of Selecting It

On Android, long-pressing a WhatsApp conversation currently selects the thread and displays actions such as pinning, archiving, muting or deleting it. Additional options are available through the overflow menu, but the interaction does not reveal the conversation’s contents.

The interface uncovered by Android Authority changes that workflow. Holding a conversation in the chat list opens a floating card containing recent messages, with a redesigned context menu underneath.

The menu brings together familiar controls, including:

  • Pin chat

  • Archive chat

  • Mute notifications

  • Mark as unread

  • Delete chat

This would combine message previews and conversation management in a single interface rather than requiring users to choose between opening a chat and selecting it for an action.

Android’s Version Could Go Further Than the iPhone Preview

WhatsApp users on iPhone have long been able to press and hold a conversation to view recent messages without triggering read receipts. That preview has a limitation, however: it does not allow scrolling, restricting how much of a long message or busy conversation can be inspected.

The Android implementation uncovered by Android Authority appears more flexible. Its preview window allows users to scroll upwards and read additional messages without sending read receipts during the publication’s testing.

If that behaviour survives into the finished release, Android users could gain more than parity with the existing iPhone feature. The ability to browse earlier messages would make the preview useful beyond checking the latest incoming text.

No Public Rollout Has Been Announced

Although the relevant code is present in a beta build, the feature remains hidden and required manual activation. Installing that version does not mean ordinary beta testers will be able to use it.

There is also no guarantee that the interface will reach users in its current form. WhatsApp could change its appearance, scrolling behaviour or read-receipt handling before release—or decide not to launch it.

For now, Android Authority’s discovery points to a potentially useful change in how Android users check their conversations: a preview that preserves access to quick actions while allowing messages to be inspected without immediately sending blue ticks.
