Can’t log in to WhatsApp? Your phone’s software may be too old

WhatsApp is introducing a login warning for some Android and iPhone users whose operating systems are outdated. According to WABetaInfo, affected users must update their phone’s software before they can sign in. Installing a newer version of WhatsApp alone will not remove the block.
What happens when you try to log in?
Affected users see a screen asking them to check their operating-system version and install the latest available update through their phone’s settings. They cannot skip this step. Once the system update is complete, they can return to WhatsApp and finish logging in.
WABetaInfo reports that the measure is being applied server-side to selected accounts on both Android and iOS. It does not require a new WhatsApp download, and users with the same version of the app may encounter the warning at different times. WhatsApp has not specified which operating-system versions trigger the block.
Why WhatsApp is requiring an update
The security of a messaging app depends partly on the phone it runs on. If an operating system lacks important security fixes, malicious software may be able to access information directly on the device. End-to-end encryption protects messages in transit, but it cannot prevent malware already on a phone from capturing content there.
The warning does not mean WhatsApp has identified a critical flaw in its app. Rather, it reflects the risk of running any app on an operating system that no longer meets the required security standard.

WABetaInfo has also reported on a separate warning being tested for unofficial WhatsApp Web clients. That feature addresses a different risk and should not be confused with the new operating-system requirement.
If you see the login warning, check your phone’s settings for a software update. What happens when a device cannot install a newer operating system remains unclear, as WhatsApp has not published the specific version requirements for this measure.
