WhatsApp Finally Testing Message Scheduling: How the New Feature Works

WhatsApp

Messaging giant WhatsApp is finally introducing one of its most highly anticipated features: the ability to schedule messages. This innovation allows users to precisely pinpoint the exact date and time for delivering texts, photos, and videos, with the system working flawlessly even when the sender’s device is offline.

Development and Android Availability

While rumored for months during its early development phases, WhatsApp has now officially kicked off testing. Through the latest Android beta update (version 2.26.40.7) available on the Google Play Store, a select group of testers can already try out this feature in both individual and group chats. Importantly, scheduled messages remain protected by the platform’s standard end-to-end encryption.

An Intuitive Interface for Text and Media

The scheduling process is designed to be seamless. After typing a message or inserting a link, users simply need to tap and hold the send button. This action triggers a new pop-up menu where the exact delivery time can be selected. Once scheduled, the app takes over and automatically delivers the message at the designated moment, regardless of whether WhatsApp is currently open.

The feature extends well beyond basic text communication

When selecting media from the gallery or using the built-in drawing editor (where users can tweak an image and add a caption), a long press on the send button allows for scheduling photos and videos. However, there is a minor technical limitation at present: users can only schedule one media file at a time within a single scheduled message.

Flexible Timeframes and Message Management

WhatsApp offers a highly flexible window for planning ahead. Messages can be scheduled as early as 10 minutes from the current time, leaving plenty of room to catch typos or make last-minute edits. On the other end of the spectrum, the maximum scheduling window stretches up to two weeks in advance—ideal for queuing up birthday wishes, holiday greetings, or business reminders.

All pending messages are managed via a dedicated new section within the chat info screen. There, users can review, manage, or completely delete their queued messages before delivery. If a sender changes their mind and deletes a scheduled message, the recipient receives absolutely no notification, nor will they ever know the message was planned in the first place.

The Privacy Nuance of Group Chats

While the scheduling feature works perfectly in group chats, there is one crucial privacy detail to note. The system will only deliver the scheduled message to members who were already part of the group at the exact moment the sender scheduled it. If a new member joins the group in the period between scheduling and delivery, they will not receive that specific message. This safeguard protects the original context of the conversation and prevents unintended information sharing with newcomers.

The feature is currently rolling out gradually and will become available to a broader user base over the coming weeks. Fortunately, all users can already receive scheduled messages, even if the sending capability hasn’t yet been activated on their own accounts.
