Faster and Easier: WhatsApp Backups Arrive in Android Settings

WhatsApp

Saving important conversations and media files from WhatsApp is about to become significantly more accessible and transparent for Android users. According to the latest information, Google is introducing practical changes to its operating system to simplify the backup management process. The new Google Play services update, specifically version 26.23, will allow users to access WhatsApp backup settings directly from the main settings menu of the device itself.

The End of Hidden Options

Until now, backup management options were deeply hidden within the WhatsApp application itself, making it difficult for many users to regularly maintain and quickly check their storage status. By integrating this page directly into the Android device settings, Google is making the entire process clearer and more logical. The new menu is expected to offer all the standard functions users are accustomed to, including selecting the desired Google account for storage, backup frequency, choosing the type of data to save, and preferences regarding the use of cellular data or Wi-Fi networks.

Although Play system updates usually do not bring many user-facing visual changes, this move clearly demonstrates Google’s intention to centralize data management on smartphones. The new option is expected to be located under the system and backup menu as soon as the update becomes globally available.

Additional Improvements in the New Update

This change does not come alone. The official changelog for version 26.23 also notes an improved experience when viewing or updating the Google Contacts sync settings. Additionally, an enhancement to the transaction history display within the Google Wallet app is mentioned, representing a very useful quality-of-life upgrade for tracking everyday finances.

The entire package of changes coincides with the recent rollout of the stable Android 17 operating system and the June 2026 Pixel Drop, which bring a long list of new features, including app Bubbles for a simplified multitasking experience. The new version of Google Play services is not yet widely available to all users, but those interested can manually check its availability by navigating to the device settings, under the system and software updates menu.
