GrapheneOS on Motorola: Razr Ultra, Razr Fold and Flagship Phones Are Part of the Plan

GrapheneOS has shared new details about its planned move beyond Google Pixel smartphones, confirming that Motorola support will eventually extend to both traditional flagship phones and Razr foldables. The privacy-focused Android operating system is expected to begin supporting its first Motorola devices in 2027, starting with a conventional non-folding flagship.
The announcement represents a significant expansion for GrapheneOS, which has long been closely tied to Google Pixel hardware. Motorola’s involvement could also help address one of the project’s most difficult challenges: keeping pace with major Android releases while maintaining rapid security updates.
First Motorola devices will be premium flagships
GrapheneOS says its initial Motorola hardware will not be aimed at the budget market. The first officially supported models are expected to be high-end devices with stronger hardware security features than lower-priced Motorola phones.
The project has previously made clear that its security standards require modern flagship hardware, long firmware support and reliable access to critical low-level components. That means the first GrapheneOS-compatible Motorola phones are expected to cost more than comparable Pixel devices.
Motorola’s current Signature, Razr Fold and Razr Ultra models are reportedly close to meeting GrapheneOS requirements. However, they still lack several security capabilities expected to arrive with next year’s Qualcomm flagship hardware.
Those expected improvements include hardware memory tagging, also known as MTE, tighter secure-element integration and additional hardware-level protections. They are likely to be tied to Qualcomm’s next premium Snapdragon generation, widely expected to be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series.
Motorola could simplify GrapheneOS development
The Motorola partnership is notable because the phone maker will reportedly take on much of the work required to support GrapheneOS.
Motorola is expected to provide firmware and drivers in a format suitable for GrapheneOS development. If issues arise with those components, they could be addressed directly through Motorola and Qualcomm rather than requiring the GrapheneOS project to work around unsupported or inaccessible components.
According to GrapheneOS, this could ultimately make future Motorola phones easier to support than newer Pixel models. That is a striking change for a platform that has traditionally treated Pixels as its preferred and most secure hardware option.
The reason is not necessarily that Pixel security has become weaker. Rather, GrapheneOS says that keeping up with major Android releases — and therefore delivering timely security patches — has become increasingly difficult on Google hardware.
Faster Android updates could be a major benefit
GrapheneOS plans to prepare Motorola releases ahead of major Android updates, allowing compatible devices to receive support as soon as a new Android version becomes available.
The project also intends to host relevant Android Open Source Project Git repositories itself, giving it more control over the timing of code updates when new Android versions are released.
For a privacy-focused operating system, rapid access to Android security fixes is essential. A device can have strong hardware protection, but its security posture weakens if the operating system cannot be updated quickly and consistently.
Motorola’s willingness to provide firmware, drivers and direct technical support could therefore become one of the most important aspects of the partnership.
Longer support may reach cheaper Motorola phones
GrapheneOS has also highlighted software support as a requirement for wider Motorola compatibility. Motorola’s new Signature series promises seven years of updates, aligning more closely with the long support windows offered by recent Pixel and Galaxy flagships.
However, many lower-priced Motorola phones still receive much shorter support. For example, the Motorola Edge 2026 reportedly promises only two major Android OS upgrades, despite carrying an approximate $600 price tag.
GrapheneOS has said that Motorola will need to provide longer update commitments for non-flagship devices before those products can gain official support. If that happens, the partnership could eventually improve long-term software support for a broader range of Motorola phones.
For now, though, GrapheneOS users should expect expensive premium hardware rather than a low-cost Pixel alternative.
Razr foldables are part of the plan
GrapheneOS has confirmed that its Motorola plans go beyond conventional smartphones. The project intends to support the Razr Fold, Razr Ultra and future standard flagship models.
Support for Razr Ultra devices would be particularly important because it would introduce a vertically folding flip-phone design to the GrapheneOS ecosystem. The platform already supports Google’s book-style foldables, including the original Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and it says Pixel 11 generation support remains part of its plans.
However, current Motorola foldables should not be expected to receive GrapheneOS support. The company’s 2026 Razr hardware is being treated as a reference point for the type of device GrapheneOS wants to support, rather than as a list of officially compatible products.

GrapheneOS support for Motorola could be one of the most important changes in the project’s history. It would give privacy-conscious users a non-Pixel hardware alternative while potentially improving the speed and reliability of future Android version transitions.
The trade-off is clear: the first devices will be premium, expensive and dependent on next-generation Qualcomm security hardware. Users looking for affordable GrapheneOS phones will likely have to wait until Motorola extends stronger hardware protections and longer update support further down its product range.
Still, the partnership points to a more flexible future for GrapheneOS. After years of being almost exclusively associated with Pixels, the platform is preparing to support conventional Motorola flagships, book-style foldables and eventually Razr flip phones — provided the hardware meets its demanding security requirements.
