HMD is finally making a smartwatch

Finally some interesting news are coming from HMD Global. After years of focusing on feature phones and audio gear, HMD is finally expanding its ecosystem with its first smartwatch (and some bands). Based on newly surfaced FCC documents and hands-on images shared by @TechStyle_47, the model will be called Watch P1, and it marks HMD’s debut in the growing smartwatch segment.

The Watch P1 features a rectangular case, a rotatable crown, and support for standard health tracking features like heart rate and SpO₂ monitoring. It offers Bluetooth calling, message and app notifications, music control, alarm, and more—making it a well-rounded daily companion.

The watch pairs with smartphones through the Pubu Wear app, available for Android and iOS. The app allows users to manage notifications, update watch software, track fitness data, and more.

Photos show that charging is handled via a two-pin magnetic connector, similar to those used by Xiaomi’s affordable wearables. While effective, this also suggests HMD is partnering with a known ODM—likely the same as Xiaomi. Wireless charging would have been a more premium choice, but likely too costly at this price point.

Battery life hasn’t been officially revealed, but to compete seriously in the budget segment, HMD will need to offer at least 10 days of usage on a single charge. Anything less, and many users may still prefer trusted budget options from Xiaomi or Amazfit.

HMD will also offer a range of colorful interchangeable bands to appeal to different styles, though the spotlight remains firmly on the Watch P1 for now.

It may be a few years late to the party, but if priced right and built well, the Watch P1 could be a smart addition to HMD’s growing ecosystem. However, what I don’t like is the fact that the watch is manufactured by the Chinese company Shenzhen Yawell Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. which is also known by the names PUBU, Colmi, and Yawell. This puts the background on HMD’s upcoming watch murky to say the least, and it is clear that it is not a product developed by HMD itself. The exact same watch is sold under the name COLMI P71 Smartwatch, and can be bought on Alixpress for 12 USD. Oh boy.
