Garmin has officially updated its flagship multisport smartwatch lineup with the Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro. The new models introduce built-in microphones and speakers, significantly brighter AMOLED displays, and an optional inReach satellite connectivity feature that enables off-grid messaging and emergency SOS without a phone.

The announcement marks a notable step forward for the Fenix series, which has long been a favorite among endurance athletes, outdoor enthusiasts and professionals who need rugged, long-lasting wearables.

Case sizes and display upgrades

Both the Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro are available in three case sizes: 43mm, 47mm and 51mm. This allows buyers to choose a form factor that suits their wrist size and sport preferences without sacrificing core functionality.

The standard Fenix 9 uses a 1.4-inch AMOLED display that Garmin says is twice as bright as the screen on the previous Fenix 8. The Fenix 9 Pro steps up to a larger 1.5-inch AMOLED panel with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, making it easier to read in direct sunlight and harsh outdoor conditions.

For users who prioritize battery life over a vibrant, always-on color display, Garmin also offers a Pro Solar variant. This model replaces the AMOLED screen with a solar-charging lens that extends runtime by harvesting sunlight.

Rugged build with dive-ready design

Garmin has reinforced the Fenix 9 series with premium materials and a robust construction:

• Titanium bezels for durability and scratch resistance.

• Sapphire lenses to protect the display from impacts and abrasion.

• Leakproof metal buttons designed to withstand pressure.

Together, these features give the watches a 40-meter dive rating, meaning they can be used for recreational scuba diving and other high-pressure water activities.

Built-in audio and smartphone integration

A major quality-of-life upgrade is the addition of built-in microphones and speakers. When paired with a smartphone over Bluetooth, the Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro can:

• Use the phone’s voice assistant to dictate and send text messages.

Garmin has also added dedicated WhatsApp integration, allowing users to read and reply to WhatsApp messages from the watch without reaching for their phone.

Garmin Epic and advanced training metrics

On the software side, Garmin introduced a new feature called Garmin Epic. This tool aggregates multiple days of activities, photos and health data into a single, scrollable timeline. The idea is to give users a more narrative view of their training blocks, adventures and recovery over time, rather than isolated daily summaries.

The Fenix 9 series retains Garmin’s established suite of training and performance metrics, including:

• Training Readiness – an indicator of how prepared your body is for a workout.

• Endurance Score – a measure of your aerobic capacity over time.

• Hill Score – insight into your climbing performance and strength.

An ECG app for atrial fibrillation (AFib) detection is also included, adding a layer of heart-health monitoring alongside the athletic features.

Storage, maps and navigation

Each watch comes with 64GB of built-in storage. That capacity is enough for up to 7,000 songs, enabling offline music playback during runs, rides and hikes without a phone.

The storage also holds multicontinent TopoActive maps. Navigation features include:

• NextFork map guides – turn-by-turn guidance for trails and routes.

• Dynamic round-trip routing – automatically generated loops based on distance and elevation preferences.

These tools are aimed at hikers, trail runners and backcountry explorers who need reliable offline navigation in remote areas.

Optional inReach satellite connectivity

The Fenix 9 Pro models offer an optional built-in inReach satellite module. When enabled, this provides:

• Two-way satellite messaging, even without cellular coverage.

• LiveTrack so contacts can follow your location in near real time.

• Interactive SOS to contact emergency services via satellite.

This turns the watch into a standalone safety device for backcountry trips, expeditions and travel in regions with limited or no mobile network coverage. Users who do not need satellite features can opt for the standard Fenix 9 or non-inReach Pro models.

Battery performance remains in line with previous Fenix flagships:

• Fenix 9 Pro Solar: up to 57 days with solar charging under ideal conditions.

All models include an integrated LED flashlight with white, red and green light options. This can be used for night runs, camp tasks, signaling or general utility in low-light environments.
