Honor Robot Phone Launches With 200MP Gimbal Camera, AI Companion and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
Honor has officially unveiled the Robot Phone in China, turning one of the year’s most unusual smartphone concepts into a commercial flagship. The device combines high-end Android hardware with a rear-mounted gimbal camera system, advanced AI functions and cinema-focused video features developed through Honor’s partnership with German filmmaking equipment specialist Arri.
First teased during the Magic8 series launch last October, the Robot Phone has since appeared in leaks, promotional teasers and an early CES prototype. Honor has now confirmed its specifications, revealing a phone designed as much around mobile imaging and AI interaction as conventional flagship performance.
A 200MP camera on a miniature gimbal
The defining feature is the rear camera system’s integrated mechanical gimbal. Honor says the module required more than 60 manufacturing processes and incorporates over 100 precision components. The design is also backed by more than 100 patents.
At the centre of the setup is what Honor describes as the industry’s smallest 4D titanium gimbal system. The company claims it is 65% smaller than conventional handheld gimbals, such as those used in products like DJI’s Osmo Pocket range.
The titanium gimbal motor weighs 2.6g and measures just 6mm thick, allowing Honor to fit the mechanism inside a handset that is 9.6mm thick overall. The compromise is weight: the Robot Phone tips the scales at 248g, making it noticeably heavier than most conventional flagship phones.
The gimbal camera uses a large 1/1.28-inch 200MP sensor with an f/1.6 aperture. It supports video recording at up to 4K resolution and works with Honor’s H1 imaging chip. Users can also control selected gimbal functions through voice commands, including directing the camera to rotate or focus on a particular point.
More than a stabilised camera
Honor is positioning the gimbal as more than a video-stabilisation tool. With support from the company’s Yoyo AI assistant, the moving camera module can observe and interact with its surroundings while handling selected tasks autonomously.
The phone also uses AI-powered subject tracking and real-time auto-framing for vlogs, livestreams and video calls. Honor has added more than 100 animated expressions to the gimbal, including movements such as nodding, peeking and dancing in response to music.
That gives the Robot Phone an unusual “robot companion” angle. Whether this becomes genuinely useful or simply an expensive way to give a camera module a personality will depend on how naturally Honor’s AI functions work outside of staged demonstrations.
Arri partnership brings cinema tools
The Robot Phone is the first product to emerge from Honor’s partnership with Arri, the German company known for professional cinema equipment. That collaboration gives the phone several video-centric features aimed at creators.
The device supports native Log-C3 video encoding, on-device LUT colour grading and a dedicated cinema mode designed to emulate the visual style of Arri cameras. These options could make the Robot Phone more appealing to users who want greater control over colour and post-production workflows without relying entirely on external editing tools.
The gimbal camera is joined by a 200MP periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.4-inch sensor and 2.7x optical zoom. A 50MP ultra-wide camera completes the rear setup and also supports macro photography.
Flagship hardware and a large battery
Outside the camera system, the Honor Robot Phone carries conventional flagship specifications. It features a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display with a 2,640 x 1,216-pixel resolution and an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz.
Honor rates the panel for up to 6,800 nits of peak local brightness and has added an AR anti-reflective coating to reduce glare in bright conditions.
The device runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and is available with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage. It ships with MagicOS 10, based on Android 16.
Power comes from a 7,060mAh silicon-carbon battery, supported by 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
