Samsung Galaxy S23 Series May End Major Updates With Android 17 and One UI 9
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 family could receive its final major operating system upgrade with Android 17-based One UI 9. The apparent change affects not only the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra, but also the Galaxy S23 FE, including the Exynos-powered model that was initially expected to receive one additional Android version.
The information stems from an alleged conversation between a Galaxy S23 FE owner and a Samsung Korea representative. While Samsung has yet to issue a formal public statement, the reported response suggests that Android 17 will be the final major OS update for the Korean Galaxy S23 FE.
A complicated Galaxy S23 FE update story
Samsung launched the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra in February 2023 with Android 13 and One UI 5.1. The Galaxy S23 FE followed in October of the same year, also running Android 13-based One UI 5.1 in some markets.
However, the Galaxy S23 FE was not identical worldwide. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 version, sold in the United States, launched with Android 13. In contrast, the Exynos 2200-powered model available in most other regions shipped with Android 14 and One UI 6.
That difference gave Exynos S23 FE owners a reasonable expectation of receiving Android 18. Samsung’s stated policy for the Galaxy S23 series covered four major Android OS upgrades, and an Android 14 launch version would ordinarily place Android 18 at the end of that cycle.
Android 18 reportedly dropped from the plan
According to the alleged Samsung Korea support exchange, the Korean Galaxy S23 FE, identified by model number SM-S711N, was initially expected to receive upgrades through Android 18. The company’s plans reportedly changed, leaving Android 17-based One UI 9 as its final major platform update instead.
If accurate, this would shorten the expected support window for Exynos versions of the Galaxy S23 FE. Those devices would effectively receive three major Android upgrades from their Android 14 launch software, rather than the four upgrades users had been led to expect from Samsung’s broader Galaxy S23 update commitment.
The reason for the reported change has not been disclosed. Samsung has not publicly explained whether the decision is connected to hardware support, regional software planning, product classification, or another factor.

Android 17-based One UI 9 is also expected to be the final major software update for the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Those phones launched with Android 13, so Android 17 would complete the four-generation update commitment Samsung made for the series.
