Xiaomi has officially pulled the wraps off its latest budget contenders, introducing the Redmi 17 series to the global market. Following up on last year’s Redmi 15 lineup, the new release debuts with two distinct models: the Redmi 17 4G and the Redmi 17 5G. While the two smartphones share an identical exterior design and a handful of key specifications, a peek under the hood reveals a fascinating mix of massive battery upgrades, quirky design choices, and a surprising display downgrade.

Display: A Step Back in Resolution?

Let’s address the elephant in the room first. Both devices sport a sprawling 6.9-inch IPS LCD panel equipped with a fluid 120Hz refresh rate. However, in a highly unusual move for the tech giant, Xiaomi has walked back from the Full HD (FHD) panels featured on their predecessors. Instead, the Redmi 17 models are equipped with a lower 1600 x 720px (HD+) resolution. While the high refresh rate will keep animations smooth, the drop in pixel density may raise eyebrows among media-heavy users.

Where the Redmi 17 series truly shines is its endurance. Xiaomi has packed an absolute behemoth of a 7,500mAh battery into both models. To keep downtime to a minimum, the phones support 45W wired fast charging, alongside a highly practical 22.5W reverse wired charging feature—essentially turning these smartphones into hefty power banks for your other gadgets.

Performance-wise, the divergence between the two models becomes clear:

• Redmi 17 4G: Powered by MediaTek’s Helio G91-Ultra processor, this variant pairs 4GB or 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM with 128GB or 256GB of older, slightly slower eMMC 5.1 storage.
