Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Use Inkjet Camera Tech to Reduce Lens Flare

Samsung may expand the use of inkjet-based camera lens manufacturing in the Galaxy S27 Ultra, a move that could help the company reduce lens thickness, limit flare and free up internal space for larger or more advanced components.

The technology was first linked to Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series before its launch. Although the company did not confirm whether the process ultimately appeared in those devices, a new report suggests that Samsung could apply it to a greater number of cameras on the Galaxy S27 Ultra than on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

A smaller solution for a familiar camera problem

Smartphone camera modules are built from several lenses arranged above an image sensor. These lenses must remain precisely aligned, which is why they use structural ribs within the lens assembly.

The problem is that light can enter through those small gaps and edges, potentially creating lens flare. Manufacturers typically address this by adding ultra-thin black light-blocking films to the ribs. While the layers are already extremely slim, they still occupy physical space inside the camera stack.

Samsung’s alleged alternative is to replace those films with a black light-blocking ink applied directly to the ribs through an inkjet process. By printing the material onto the component rather than adding a separate film, Samsung could further reduce the thickness of the lens package.

Thinner camera modules, fewer optical compromises

The potential advantages extend beyond saving a fraction of a millimetre. A thinner lens module could contribute to a slimmer phone design, create more internal room for other hardware or allow Samsung to use larger and more capable components without increasing the handset’s overall dimensions.

The process could also reduce flare across more camera sensors, potentially improving image quality in difficult lighting conditions. Bright lights, reflections and night scenes are common situations in which flare can become especially visible, so any improvement in light control could be meaningful for real-world photography.

There is no confirmed information on how many Galaxy S26 Ultra cameras may have used the inkjet process. However, the latest report claims that Samsung intends to extend the technique to more lenses in the Galaxy S27 Ultra camera system.

A subtle upgrade with practical benefits

The change may not be a headline-grabbing camera specification, but it could have a practical effect on both smartphone design and imaging performance. Samsung’s flagship camera systems are increasingly complex, and even small reductions in module thickness can help engineers balance optical hardware, battery capacity, cooling and device dimensions.

If the report proves accurate, the Galaxy S27 Ultra may benefit from a cleaner optical design across more cameras. The result could be less flare, more efficient use of internal space and greater flexibility for Samsung as it develops its next-generation flagship. As usual, however, Samsung will need to confirm the technology and its implementation before the details can be treated as final.
