AAC Technologies behind Skyline’s 108 MP Camera

Recently, the HMD Skyline (TA-1600/TA-1688) received FCC certification, and the revealed documents provided some interesting details about the camera manufacturer.

Skyline uses Samsung’s S5KHM6 108 MP 0.64 µm CMOS image sensor, which was first introduced in the Realme 9. This high-quality sensor comes in a 1/1.67″ format and features 108 MP pixels that are 0.64 µm in size.

However, according to the documents, the actual manufacturer of the sensor is not Samsung, but AAC Technologies. This Chinese company produces camera sensors for various brands, including Xiaomi, Oppo, and even Apple. Samsung has also listed AAC Technologies Holdings Inc. as one of its suppliers, indicating that the company manufactures sensors for Samsung phones as well, which are considered top-tier in mobile photography.

I also checked the Nokia X30, which uses Samsung’s 50 MP sensor (S5KGN5), though that one was made by Qtech. Meanwhile, the 64 MP camera in the Nokia XR21 was produced by OmniVision, a company known for creating some of the best sensors in the industry.

The sensor used in Skyline is quite capable, so the only reason it might not perform as well as expected could be that HMD still needs to fine-tune the algorithms that process the light captured by this sensor.
