Nokia G42 5G

Nokia Mobile has been taking baby steps and testing the waters of India’s 5G smartphone space very cautiously and slowly. In over three years, the company has launched nine 5G smartphones globally, but only three made it to India and were brought from China.

Now, the company is in the process of releasing the Nokia G42 5G in the country, which will also be its first 5G smartphone to be made in India. This morning, the company revealed the launch date to be 6th September. Subsequently, a listing of the smartphone’s 6/128 GB variant in purple colour showed up on Amazon.

The Nokia G42 5G is the first self-repairable 5G smartphone by HMD Global. However, there’s no surety of the company making that aspect a selling point in India as Sanmeet Singh Kochhar (former Vice President (VP) – India & MENA, current VP – AMEA, HMD Global) did not sound very optimistic about Nokia Mobile bringing it to the country during the global launch of Nokia G22 at MWC 2023.

Apart from that, the device boasts of:

  • Gorilla Glass 3-protected 6.56-inch HD+ display with 90 Hz refresh rate and brightness boost up to 560 nits.
  • Triple camera setup of 50 MP main, 2 MP depth, and 2 MP macro cameras with LED flash at the back and 8 MP camera at the front.
  • Up to three days of battery life on a single charge with a 5000 mAh battery and 20 W charging.
  • Up to 11 GB RAM (6 GB base and up to 5 GB virtual) or Up to 6 GB RAM (4 GB base and up to 2 GB virtual) with 128 GB internal storage and microSD card support up to 1 TB.
  • Two OS upgrades and three years of monthly security updates. Comes with a Snapdragon 480 Plus 5G processor and Android 13 OS.
  • OZO 3D audio recording and OZO playback.
  • IP52-rated dust and water splash resistance.
  • Face and fingerprint unlock.
  • USB Type-C port, 3.5 mm audio port, Bluetooth 5.1, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax-ready.
  • Having a charger in the box.

As it has always been, the pricing will decide the level of success of the Nokia G42 5G in India. The previous 5G smartphones by the brand didn’t flourish due to the heftier price tags attached to them, probably a result of the high import duty. That should not be the case with the Nokia G42 5G, and Nokia Mobile will hopefully be able to find a sweet spot for the device in this ever-competitive market.

Update: Since Nokia Mobile had not previously named the device that it was going to launch, even though it was pretty evident from its teasers, as soon as the clock struck midnight of 6th September, the company announced that it is the Nokia G42 5G that will be launched. Also, an Amazon webpage emerged showcasing the device’s highlights and touting the device to be “coming soon.” One can click the “Notify Me” button on the webpage to receive an update on its availability.
