New Nokia Mobile India website is now a PWA

Nokia Mobile updated the mobile version of the official Nokia.com/phones website for India. The new mobile website is a Progressive Web Application, having some capabilities and UI elements of classic smartphone applications.

Visiting the dedicated mobile site for India automatically redirects to the “/store” route, offering visitors the ability buy the latest Nokia phones directly from Nokia Mobile, which makes sense.

On the bottom of the mobile UI we can see the navigation bar, with the webapp also prompting you to “install it” on your device. If you turn off your internet connection and open the new PWA from your homescreen, the webapp will load with content available for viewing offline. Of course, you won’t be able to make an order considering that you need to communicate with a server for that, but having a PWA as the official mobile site is a great step forward in following the latest trends in software development. And offering offline experience, faster UI and a lighter website is great for the end customer as well.

If we check Google’s Lighthouse benchmark, we can see that the new site really is a PWA, but there is also room for improvement for Nokia Mobile’s web developers. In any case, great job.

Thanks Garvit for the tip. 🙂
