How to get the best gaming experience out of your home WiFi

Because of the unfortunate COVID-19 outbreak, most of us have the responsibility of staying at home and not wandering outside, to contain the spread of the virus. And, probably many of us have chosen gaming as the activity to easier deal with the situation, but what could be frustrating is not being able to achieve that rank or struggling to go through a level just because of bad WiFi?

So, after showing us how to boost our WiFi network, Nokia is now showing us how to get the most out of our home WiFi for maximizing our gaming experience. Nokia’s blog post describing the solutions is well detailed and explains all the technical reasons too.

So, let us see what the solutions that Nokia suggests are:

  • Choose well between the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz band. Nokia asks us to use the 5 GHz band as it does not involve overlapping channels unlike the 2.4 GHz band, hence you will get faster signals. Also, Nokia suggests shifting to the 2.4 GHz band, if your WIFi router is far away from your gaming console.
  • Using a “mesh” solution enabled WiFI device over the WiFI extenders or repeaters not only creates a seamless network, but it majorly improves the latency or the lag and in overall, the speed, says Nokia.
  • The next best solution is, an Ethernet connection from your gaming console to the WiFi router. Do not worry if your gaming console is far away from your router, because that is where a “mesh” solution enabled WiFi device will come in handy for you. After all, those come with Ethernet ports, and keeping one of those WiFi mesh junctions closer to your gaming console, will solve it all.
  • Enable the Quality of Service (QoS) gaming optimizations that come pre-configured in your WiFi router and select the games which you want to prioritize, so that your WiFi system can improve the signal and speed by managing the traffic requests as per the given priorities.

Though, the present-day gaming consoles do not support it, Nokia says that the new WiFi 6 standards will dramatically improve the speed and signal, once it finds its way into the future gaming consoles. Till then, the above-mentioned solutions will provide a much better gaming experience and will help you reduce your gaming rage.

Also, Nokia has its own range of “mesh” solution enabled WiFi devices, the Nokia WiFi Beacons. We also reviewed the Nokia Beacon 3, which still works very efficiently and can improve your home WiFi connectivity! 😉
