OnePlus 8 Pro comes with Nokia OZO Audio technology

Nokia just announced that the newest member of the OnePlus family, OnePlus 8 Pro, features the proprietary Nokia OZO Audio technology.

OnePlus, a member of BBK Electronics’ family of brands that include Oppo, Vivo and Realme, today introduced the new OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. Both devices come with Snapdragon 865 and support 5G. The “Pro” model also uses Nokia’s OZO Audio sound recording technology, that can also be found on some Oppo and Nokia smartphones.

The 8 Pro features 3 microphones and supports OZO Audio 3D, Audio Zoom and Audio Windscreen. Audio 3D allows the phone to record spatial sound, Audio Zoom amplifies and clears the sound from the object you are zooming in, while Windscreen makes sure the sound is great even in windy conditions by using smart wind detection algorithms.

The part of Nokia that is licensing and developing OZO Audio is called Nokia Technologies. That division is also responsible for patent licensing on the group level. Nokia or Nokia Technologies shouldn’t be confused with Nokia Mobile, which is HMD Global – also a Finnish company, that licensed the Nokia brand for smartphones and featurephones.

On one hand, it makes me sad to see that a Nokia technology isn’t exclusively used by Nokia smartphones, but I understand why for Finnish Nokia it makes more sense to open up to other companies as well. After Oppo, OnePlus is the second BBK brand using OZO Audio, meaning that BBK has found value in OZO Audio and hopefully that cooperation will only be deepened in the future. As as with the new Oppo Find phones, we would like to get our hands on the new OnePlus 8 Pro as well, to see how OZO Audio is being used on it.
