Nokia in top 10 smartphone brands in China (Q3 2018)

Even though Q3 2018 was a relatively long time ago and right now we are waiting for Q4 2018 results in the mobile market, Canalys posted their Q3 2018 report about the important Chinese markets. While Apple in particular had rough last few quarters in China, HMD Global appeared on the top 10 list.

According to Canalys, Nokia was the 10th smartphone brand in China in Q2 and Q3 2018. The introduction of aggressively priced Nokia X5 and X6 (later on the X7) surely helped HMD to make its way on the list, though they have still a lot of climbing ahead to the top. HMD was also the only small vendor placed into the “high growth” quadrant by Canalys as pictured below.

The Chinese market recorded 15% fewer shipments of smartphones in Q3 2018 (101 million) compared to Q3 2017 (119 million). The average price of a smartphone sold during Q3 2018 was 305 US dollars. The market is dominated by domestic players, with Apple being No.5 and Samsung No.7. The two of them, together with HMD, were the only foreign vendors on the top 10 list.
