New camera update starts hitting Nokia devices

At today’s Nokia Mobile event in India, where the company launched the Nokia 5.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 Plus, new software features for existing Nokia phones were announced. HMD’s CPO Juho Sarvikas, during the presentation, announced that a new camera update should soon start hitting
the ZEISS-branded Nokia 6.1, 7 plus, 8 and 8 Sirocco, which brings an improved design with new features. The rest of the devices should receive the update with Android Pie, if I heard correctly.

Contrary to Juho’s words, the update is already available for more devices. We can confirm that Nokia 3.1, 5.1 and Nokia 6 started receiving the camera update, and my guess is that the update should be available for other phones from the Nokia portfolio as well. You can find the update by going to Google Play and refreshing your library in case the update doesn’t show automatically. The update is 247MB in size and the official changelog states that it brings:

  • Comprehensive support for Google Lens and Google Motion
  • New carousel design to bring you a new camera experience while switching among different modes

The new carousel design makes the app easier to use, and new features are always welcomed. The Pro UI known from Lumia devices is still present with a swipe up gesture on ZEISS optics devices. I’m currently downloading the app and will post more screenshots and impressions later. Thanks Inno for the screenshots above. 🙂

Here are some screenshots from the Nokia 6.1 camera app and Nokia 3.1 camera app. New camera app is a bit buggy on 6.1, but working perfectly on Nokia 3.1. You can now use Bokeh effect for the front facing camera only, but hopefully Nokia Mobile will bring this option for the main camera.

If you received the update, tell us your impressions down below. 🙂

Update: The camera app for Nokia 8 after the update doesn’t include pro, bokeh or black and white modes on Nokia 8, as per reports from users. HMD most likely sent a wrong version to the 8, so if you have an 8, don’t update the camera app just yet.
