Q2 2018: Nokia No. 3 in feature phones and No. 9 in smartphones globally
|Counterpoint Research posted their Q2 2018 analysis of the mobile market. Apart from the major event of Huawei overtaking Apple as the second largest smartphone vendor, HMD Global also achieved a milestone – getting into the top 10 group of smartphone manufacturers.
In their Q2 2018 report, Counterpoint Research states that HMD took the 9th spot in the smartphone race globally, capturing 1% of the market with 4.5 million units shipped. HMD’s Year-on-year growth is 782%, because HMD in Q2 2017 shipped just half a million smartphones. The number of 4.5 million isn’t that impressive compared to other players, but the sales are growing, while the market declined 2%.
In terms of feature phones, HMD also had a good quarter. Counterpoint Research shared with us some data about the performance of Nokia-branded feature phones. In Q2 2018, HMD captured 15% of the market share, which placed him on number 3 globally. The positive thing is that the growth is 35% YoY. The biggest market for Nokia feature phones was the Middle East and Africa region contributing to around one third of the total shipments. India captured around 23% of the total shipments. The growth was driven by emerging markets like UAE, Russia, Egypt, Nigeria and Bangladesh, states Counterpoint Research’s analyst Varun Mishra for NokiaMob.
Another important milestone: for @HMDGlobal @Nokiamobile as they break into the top ten global rankings for the first time becoming 9th largest brand globally.
Though a long way to go to scale up beyond EMEA & Asia.
